Kashmiri handicrafts sent by international express courier usually reach buyers within 7 to 14 working days of ordering. That covers 1 to 3 days for inspection and packing, plus roughly 5 to 10 working days in transit. Large items such as hand-knotted carpets and walnut furniture take longer.
Ordering a hand-woven Pashmina shawl or a hand-painted papier-mâché vase from Srinagar is exciting. Waiting for it to cross continents is less so. Two questions come up again and again: how long will delivery take, and will my piece arrive in perfect condition? This guide answers both in plain language.
How long does international shipping from Kashmir take?
Every parcel moves through three stages, and knowing them removes most of the guesswork.
- Preparation (1 to 3 working days). Each piece is inspected for finish and flaws, its label and certificates are checked, and it is packed by hand.
- Transit (about 5 to 10 working days). Express couriers carry lightweight parcels to the USA, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and the Gulf.
- Customs clearance (0 to 4 days). Most parcels clear quickly, but a random inspection or missing paperwork can add a few days.
Here is what to expect by product type:
- Pashmina shawls, stoles and crewel panels: the lightest items, usually 5 to 10 working days in transit.
- Papier-mâché, copperware and small walnut pieces: usually 7 to 12 working days.
- Hand-knotted carpets and large furniture: air cargo takes around two to three weeks, while sea freight can take four to eight weeks.
Four things can change your delivery date: the destination country, the parcel’s size and weight, festive-season courier volume, and how quickly you answer any customs query. Import duties and taxes are generally the receiver’s responsibility, and many couriers hold a parcel until they are paid. Keep your phone and email active, and use the tracking number you receive.
How are Kashmiri handicrafts packed for international delivery?
Good packing protects against three enemies: moisture, pressure and movement. The method changes with each craft.
Pashmina shawls and stoles. Pashmina is a fine, delicate fibre that dislikes damp. A shawl is folded gently in soft tissue, sealed in a moisture-resistant bag, and placed in a sturdy box or padded mailer. This keeps the weave soft, the fringe untangled and the colours clean.
Hand-knotted carpets. Carpets are rolled, never folded, because folding can crack the foundation and leave permanent creases. The roll is wrapped in plastic against humidity, then covered with a strong woven outer layer and taped at the seams.
Papier-mâché and copperware. Hand-painted lacquer and engraved copper scratch easily. Each item is wrapped in bubble wrap or foam, set in a box with generous cushioning, and then placed inside a second outer carton. This double-boxing absorbs knocks during handling.
Walnut wood carvings. Deep carving means fine, protruding details. Corners and carved edges receive extra foam, and larger furniture travels in reinforced crates padded on every side.
Across every craft the aim is the same: nothing should be able to move, press or get wet.
How can you check that what arrives is authentic?
Packing protects the product; certification protects your trust. Kashmir now uses Geographical Indication (GI) labels with QR codes to prove that a handmade piece is genuine. The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom won a national SKOCH Award for its GI QR code system, which lets buyers scan a label and trace Pashmina, Kani shawls, Sozni embroidery and hand-knotted carpets back to their maker. According to Kashmir Life, 18 crafts across Jammu and Kashmir hold GI registration, and around 70,000 handmade items have already been tested and certified with QR labels.
Whichever piece you choose from our collection of authentic Pashmina shawls, keep the label and certificate that come with it. Our returns policy asks for them if you ever need to send an item back.
